Brooklyn

by

Colm Tóibín

Mr. Bartocci is the owner of Bartocci’s, the department store where Eilis works when she comes to Brooklyn. Mr. Bartocci is a friend of Father Flood’s, which is how Eilis gets the job in the first place. For the most part, he is a nice man, though Miss Fortini warns Eilis that she shouldn’t “cross” him twice, saying this after Eilis has to go home one day because she’s too homesick to concentrate on work.
