An African-American man who works for Frank Ross. Yarnell accompanies Mattie when she travels to Fort Smith to claim her father’s body. When she informs him that she won’t be returning to Little Rock with him, he’s hesitant to let her go off on her own, though he clearly understands that she’s too strong-willed to be stopped. He tells her to be careful and agrees to ride the train home with the coffin.
