Lafayette Character Analysis

In the first act, the French Marquis de Lafayette is one of Hamilton’s closest friends. Building on his historical role as the primary emissary from France, the musical depicts Lafayette as an immigrant, an essential ally, and a rapid-fire (bi-lingual) rapper and thinker. When Lafayette returns with essential ammunitions for the Americans, he and Hamilton reflect on the centrality of immigrants to the American war effort: “immigrants, we get the job done” (“Guns and Ships”). In the second act, the same actor plays Thomas Jefferson.
