Warren Wolde Character Analysis

Warren Wolde is Marn Wolde’s uncle and the owner of a large farm just outside of Pluto, North Dakota. He is also, as Cordelia Lochren eventually discovers, the man responsible for the murders that begin the novel (in the prologue
“SOLO”), for which Holy Track and his friends are falsely blamed. Warren is depicted as angry and erratic, frequently warning Marn “it’s on you. You’re gonna kill.” When Warren gets ill late in life, he is treated by Cordelia, who is at the time still unaware of her patient’s murderous past. Warren eventually passes away when he hears Corwin Peace play the violin, perhaps because this music reminds him of the “unearthly violin solo” that played during the murders. After his death, Warren leaves his money to Cordelia in such a fashion that she recognizes him as her family’s killer, meaning that Cordelia has inadvertently “saved the life of [her] family’s murderer.”

12. The Daniels Quotes

But there is no need. Billy says it all. Every night, back in Dad’s office, Billy helps him straighten out the mess, helps file, and helps decide which bills to pay on and which to string along. Dad has agreed, with surprising disinterest, to let the retired people camp near an old burnt farmstead where a hand-pump well is still in operation. The end of our land bumps smack up to the reservation boundary. This was reservation, Billy says, and should be again. This was my family’s land, Indian land. Will be again. He says it flat out with a lack of emotion that disturbs me. Something’s there. Something’s different underneath.

16. The Reptile Garden Quotes

The playing of the violin is the only thing in the world and in that music there is dark assurance. The music understands, and it will be there whether we stay in pain or gain our sanity, which is also painful. I am small. I am whole. Nothing matters. Things are startling and immense. When the music is just reverberations, I stand up. The nurse is checking her watch and frowning at it first, then down at Warren, then at her watch again. I stand next to Corwin as he carefully replaces his violin in its case and snaps the latches down. I look at my cousin and he looks at me—under those eyebrows, he gives his wicked, shy grin and points his lips in a kiss, toward the door.

“I can’t leave here,” I say.

And I walk out of that place.

21. Disaster Stamps of Pluto Quotes

We declare our society defunct. We shall, however, keep walking the perimeter of Pluto until our footsteps wear our orbit into the earth. My last act as the president of Pluto’s historical society is this: I would like to declare a town holiday to commemorate the year I saved the life of my family’s murderer.

[…] All who celebrate shall be ghosts. And there will be nothing but eternal dancing, dust on dust, everywhere you look.

Oh my, too apocalyptic, I think as I leave my house to walk over to Neve’s to help her cope with her sleepless night. Dust on dust! There are very few towns where old women can go out at night and enjoy the breeze, so there is that about Pluto. I take my cane to feel the way, for the air is so black I think already we are invisible.
