Doctor Rogé is a patron of the restaurant where Roquentin and Achille are separately having lunch. When he enters, he greets the assembled patrons warmly and makes easy conversation with the waitress. Noticing his worn and finely wrinkled face, Roquentin identifies him as a man of experience: someone who has served his community, married, and had children. Roquentin reacts to Doctor Rogé defensively, refusing to laugh along with his jokes, while Achille relaxes in his presence. Ultimately, Roquentin comforts himself by concluding that Doctor Rogé will die soon as a result of his full life.
