A woman known as “The Widow of Two” because she has outlived her two husbands, Prudencia is one of Florentino’s lovers. Florentino goes to her house in a state of mental agitation after declaring his love to Fermina Daza on the day of Dr. Urbino’s funeral. Prudencia, who once hoped to marry Florentino, understands that his vague words allude to Fermina Daza, and this convinces Florentino that women are always able to identify the true intentions that lie behind people’s words. Florentino later visits Prudencia, who has gone blind in old age, on multiple occasions to demonstrate that he has not forgotten her.
