Minor Characters
Captain Hoseason
Captain Hoseason commands the brig Covenant. He agrees to kidnap David in exchange for money and plans to sell him in the Carolinas. After rescuing Alan Breck, he plots to kill him as well. Hoseason leads the ship through dangerous waters before it wrecks near the island of Mull.
Mr. Riach
Mr. Riach is the first mate aboard the Covenant. He helps knock David unconscious during the kidnapping but later tends to his injuries. He persuades Hoseason to move David to safer quarters and occasionally speaks out against the violence on board. He later assists in negotiations with Alan Breck.
Mr. Shuan
Mr. Shuan is a brutal sailor aboard the Covenant. He regularly beats Ransome and later kills him in a drunken fit. He dies during the round-house battle against Alan and David.
Ransome
Ransome is a young cabin boy on the Covenant, who has been hardened by abuse. He befriends David, who pities him deeply. Shuan kills him early in the voyage.
Cluny Macpherson

John Breck Maccoll
John Breck Maccoll is a friend of Alan’s who deciphers the signal of the silver button and symbolic cross. He delivers money and news to Alan and David while they are in hiding.
King George
King George II is the reigning monarch during the time of the novel. His rule represents the British government’s authority over Scotland, particularly following the Jacobite uprising.
Ardshiel
Ardshiel is Alan’s exiled clan chief, living in France after the failed Jacobite rebellion. His tenants continue to secretly collect rent for him, defying British orders.
Torrance
