Gran’ Hopper Character Analysis

Gran’ Hopper is the old midwife whom Mrs. Lapham calls to attend to Johnny’s burnt hand. Though she’s a skilled midwife and has lots of experience with various maladies, burns aren’t her specialty—so she allows Johnny’s hand to curl in, which is less painful for the burn victim but causes scar tissue to fuse Johnny’s thumb to his palm.
