Filippa Kosta Character Analysis

Filippa’s typecast is the extra—that is, she doesn’t have a well-defined typecast. Instead, she tends to play leftover roles, especially ones that require her to dress as a man. The other characters often comment on how overlooked she is—at one point, Oliver remarks that people underestimate her too much. By the end of the novel, this is proven true—Filippa knew the truth about who killed Richard all along. She’s also a loyal friend to Oliver and to all of the others; she faithfully visits him in prison, and she keeps the secret of Richard’s murder in order to protect her friends, the only family she’s ever known. She gets defensive when asked about her background. At the end of the book, it’s revealed that she married Camilo and works at Dellecher as one of the theatre faculty alongside Frederick and Gwendolyn.

Act 2, Prologue Quotes

Maybe [Dellecher], like Filippa, has hardly changed at all. I can still see it, lush and green and wild, in some tiny way enchanted, like Oberon’s wood, or Prospero’s island. There are things they don’t tell you about such magical places—that they’re as dangerous as they are beautiful. Why should Dellecher be any different?

Epilogue Quotes

Suddenly it seems there is a fourth person in the room. For the first time in ten years, I look at the chair that had always been Richard’s and find it isn’t empty. There he sits, in lounging, leonine arrogance. He watches me with a razor-thin smile and I realize that this is it—the dénouement, the counterstroke, the end-all he was waiting for. He lingers only long enough for me to see the gleam of triumph in his half-lidded eyes; then he, too, is gone.
