Two days later, Mallow meets with Senior Lieutenant Drawt in his private quarters to transfer command. Mallow gives Drawt an envelope with coordinates, a roll of microfilm containing his official report, and a time capsule. He instructs Drawt to proceed to a specific planet and wait there for two months. If Mallow does not return or Foundation ships do not locate the crew within that time, Drawt is to deliver the time capsule to Terminus as the final report. Shortly after, Mallow departs the ship in a lifeboat.
Mallow’s preparations with Drawt show his calculated approach to risk and his emphasis on preserving the mission’s outcomes, regardless of personal danger. By arranging for the capsule to be delivered if he fails to return, Mallow secures the continuity of the Foundation’s strategy and prioritizes its broader goals over his individual safety.
