Yusupka Gimazetdin, later known as Galliulin, is the son of Tiverzin’s porter. Initially a railroad apprentice, he later becomes a soldier in the Russian and White armies. Yusupka is viciously abused by his master, Khudoleev, and depends on Tiverzin for protection. As an adult he develops a strict sense of honor. When his new position as an officer during World War I allows him to exact revenge on the elderly Khudoleev, he requests Khudoleev’s transfer to the frontlines instead. Galliulin spends the summer of 1917 with Yuri Zhivago and Lara in Meliuzeevo, but he goes on to side with the Provisional Government and lead the White Army in Siberia, where he becomes Strelnikov’s main rival. He remains an honorable man, however, protecting Lara from his own soldiers during the White occupation of Yuriatin.
