Mikulitsyn is the former manager of the aristocratic estate of Varykino and the surrounding farms and factories. A liberal socialist, Mikulitsyn was exiled to Yuriatin as a young man; his son’s unusual name, Liberius, reflects Mikulitsyn’s political idealism. Mikulitsyn and Liberius are now political opponents, however, as Mikulitsyn was elected to the Provisional Government’s Constituent Assembly as a member of the Socialist Revolutionary party, one of the Bolsheviks’ main rivals. Mikulitsyn lives in the otherwise abandoned village of Varykino with his second wife, Elena Proklovna Mikulitsyna, but his generous nature prevents him from turning the Zhivago family away, despite the risks that come with taking in a politically suspect family from the capital. Mikulitsyn’s fate after Varykino is attacked and abandoned is left unclear.
