Evgraf Zhivago is Yuri Zhivago’s half-brother from the Siberian city of Omsk. Evgraf is a mysterious figure in Yuri’s life who appears at critical moments to help his brother and his family. Evgraf is well-connected with the Bolshevik authorities and is able to provide food and medicine to the Zhivagos in Moscow in the winter of 1917-1918 and in Yuriatin the following year. Evgraf reappears years later during the NEP when Yuri has returned to Moscow and sets about helping his brother return to writing and medicine. After Yuri’s death, Evgraf prepares his writing for publication with Lara’s help. By World War II Evgraf has become a Red Army general, a position of power he uses to help Yuri and Lara’s now-orphaned daughter, Tanya.
