Snopes is the local farmer from whom Anse gets a new team of mules midway through the novel. Anse trades Snopes some of Cash’s savings, some of his own money that he has been saving for a set of new teeth, and finally Jewel’s horse – all to get himself a new team of mules, rather than simply borrowing Armstid’s team of mules, Armstid he generously offered.
